The Hoxton, Southwark, Review: Cool but no Cucumber

The Hoxton Southwark is known for its trendy vibe, effortlessly blending style and comfort in one of London’s most vibrant areas. With its chic reception bar and restaurant, it certainly makes a strong first impression. However, my stay was a mixed bag, with some highs and a few lows that left me questioning whether it lived up to its reputation.

Arrival and First Impressions

The entrance to The Hoxton Southwark is undeniably cool, with a buzzing bar and restaurant area that immediately grabs your attention. Finding the reception desk behind all this coolness, however, was a bit of a challenge. When I did locate it, the check-in experience was somewhat frosty—not the warm welcome you might hope for after navigating through the lively surroundings.

The Room: From Disappointment to an Upgrade

The first room I was allocated had some issues with the air conditioning, which made the room uncomfortably warm. When I raised this with the front desk, the response was less than sympathetic, making me feel a bit silly for bringing it up. Thankfully, after some back and forth, I was moved to a new room, which was a welcome upgrade.

The new room had much more space and a wonderfully squishy king bed that was a delight to sink into after a long day. The shower room, however, was still on the small side, even in the larger room, but it was stocked with nice shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner from the brand Blank, which added a touch of luxury to the experience.

Dining: A Mixed Experience

Dinner in the hotel’s restaurant was decent but didn’t leave much of an impression. The service was slow, though I could tell the lone server was doing his best on a quiet Sunday night. It’s worth noting that if I had ventured up to Seabird, the rooftop restaurant known for its buzzy atmosphere, the experience might have been different. Still, the meal was adequate, but nothing to write home about.

Room Amenities and Views: A Few Bright Spots

One of the highlights of the stay was the view from the room. Looking out at the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament was a real treat, adding a sense of place to the stay. The room itself had some nice touches, such as branded mugs and a selection of books, which added a bit of personality and charm.

Final Thoughts: An Average Stay with Room for Improvement

Overall, my stay at The Hoxton Southwark was average. While the hotel has a lot going for it in terms of style and location, the experience didn’t quite live up to expectations, especially given the price. The initial hiccup with the air conditioning and the frosty reception left a bit of a sour taste, though the upgrade and eventual offer to make things right next time were appreciated.

The Hoxton Southwark has potential, especially with its cool vibe and great views, but the service and overall experience left something to be desired. At the price point, I’m not sure I’ll be rushing back, but with a few tweaks, it could become the go-to spot it’s clearly striving to be.
